Exposing once again chinks in the armour of the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Examinations (MSBT), it has been revealed that polytechnic first year first semester question papers are available in the city at Rs 300 to Rs 1200 per subject before exams. Though the exam of maths-1 paper scheduled for November 24 has been postponed, the papers of maths and English, which were held on November 16 and November 21 respectively, were available in the market before exams. There is a racket successfully leaking question papers and the MSBT has failed to bust it. This is the season of exams of the first semester of the first year of polytechnic. The exam of maths-1 was scheduled on November 23 but the students got question papers in their hand a day in advance, of course through the racket. Finally, the MSBT postponed the exam. One of the professors alleged that MSBT officials are behind this racket and that it is an open secret. Sources informed this scribe that so far three papers have been leaked. Price for one paper was Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 and groups of students contributed money to buy them, said a student on condition of anonymity.
All papers leaked
The first semester exam of polytechnic students started after Diwali. Surprisingly, the students were getting question papers a day in advance. Question paper of Maths was available with a student at 10 pm on November 15 and the exam was on the next day. Similarly, English paper was available on November 20 but the exam was scheduled on November 21. At first, students did not believe and refused to purchase the papers but they compared the copies made available in advance with the actual paper after exam and found no difference. So, students purchased papers of other subjects and they were assured to provide papers of all the subjects by their suppliers.
Applied mechanics also
The exam of the second-year applied mechanics subject has been scheduled for Monday but when our correspondent contacted one such supplier on phone and placed a demand for the question paper, he assured to make it available by 5 pm on Sunday. Thus it was very clear that the papers of second year were also available for students.
Involvement of colleges for credit
When this scribe delved deeper into the issue, it was found that two city based colleges were behind the leaks. These colleges allegedly provided the question papers to their students for better results but the students tried to sell them to their friends from other colleges and the news spread like wildfire in the city. Pretending to be a student, this correspondent contacted some students who were reportedly selling the question papers and sought the copies. The students agreed on the condition that their identity would not be disclosed. They also asked the scribe to stay away from the person who was supplying the paper. They then took him to Garkheda and keeping him at a distance took four photo copies of maths-1 paper, promising to provide other papers too.
Trouble for sincere students
On Saturday, the students reached exam halls to appear for the maths-1 paper but were shocked to know that the exam was cancelled by the MSBT. Most of the students, who were not aware of any incident of paper leak, were upset.
No comment from directorate
Deputy director of the technical education S B Vishwarupe, when contacted for his reaction, disconnected the phone without any reply. He did not react about the action by the directorate in this matter. News-LT

"If you have a great aim in life, continuously acquire knowledge, work hard with confidence to win and have the confidence to defeat problems and succeed with righteous heart, you will definitely succeed in all your missions. It does not matter who you are," said Dr A P J Kalam, former president of the country in a 14-page speech sent to the varsity. It may be noted here that Dr Kalam was to visit the university and was to interact with the students and teachers on November 16. However, his visit was cancelled as he was suffering from high fever and his doctors advised him 'no movement.' Talking to the newsmen, vice chancellor Dr Vijay Pandharipande said that despite his ill health, Dr Kalam sent the 14-page speech to the varsity one day before the programme. In the speech, he said no youth today should fear about future as the ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource on the earth, under the earth and above the earth.
Dr Kalam shared a few thoughts on 'What would you like to be remembered for?
Elaborating on criteria for achievement for youth, the Missileman said that there are four proven steps: have an aim in life before 20 years of age, acquiring knowledge continuously, hard work towards the aim and persevere to defeat the problem and succeed. "Now you know, how unique personalities got evolved and also you realise how to transform yourself into unique one. And above all, what you need is will power and confidence, that you can achieve through great deeds," he said. Sharing his opinion on 'Unique You,' former president of the country said when we see a bulb, our thoughts go to the inventor Thomas Alva Edison immediately, same for aeroplane (Wright Brothers), telephone (Alexander Graham Bell), Mathematics (Srinivas Ramanujan) and radium (Madam Curie).
"The challenge, my young friends is that you have to fight the hardest battle, which any human being can ever imagine to fight and never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined place, that is a 'Unique You.' What will be your tools to fight this battle, what are they: have a great aim in life, continuously acquire the knowledge, work hard and preserve to realise the great achievement." Shailesh Bharatkumar Thakkar, a 35-year-old jeweller from the city reportedly missing since Saturday, was found dead in Godavari river at Pravara Sangam on Wednesday night. The place from where the body was recovered falls under the jurisdiction of the Newasa police. Police sources said his body was packed in a jute bag and a boulder was tied to his waist. The body was brought to Aurangabad this noon and the deceased was cremated after the post-mortem was conducted at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). His death is suspected to be a homicide. However, things will become clear only after the medical reports are received. Shailesh, who was running a jewellery shop 'Swami Narayan Jewellers' in Sarafa lane, was a bachelor and had gone to Vaijapur in connection with his business on Saturday. He had jewellery and some cash with him.
His last mobile tower location was found in Yeola tehsil of Nasik district.
Jewellers observe bandh
Hundreds of city jewellers today kept their shops closed to protest against the suspected murder of Thakkar, a resident of Diwan Deodi, and presented a memorandum to the rural police demanding immediate arrest of culprits.
Resentment and anger was palpable soon after the news of Thakkar's murder spread. Shops remained closed and traders poured on to the streets. No transaction was witnessed in any shop in Saraf Bazaar, Keli Bazaar, Kasari Bazaar, Paandariba and other such markets.
The president of the district bullion merchants association, Ashok Waregaonkar, said goldsmiths and their craftsmen are facing life threats. "Such incidents had occurred earlier too, but no drastic step has been taken for protecting their lives and property. The business community is facing a strange situation. On the one hand they aren't issued arms licences by the police while on the other, they aren't protected. It is difficult to run business in such circumstances. Nearly 18 jewellers have applied for arms licences but only four of them have been issued the licences," he said. The traders' umbrella organisation, Zilla Vyapari Mahasang, backed today's bandh. Mahasangh president Aadeshpal Singh Chhabda, echoing Waregaonkar's demand, demanded that jewellers be issued arms licences. Their lives and wealth is in danger as they are often targeted by goons. "Such incidents are reported from all parts of the State. The culprits in this case must be brought to book and given the toughest punishment," Singh added. Later, a delegation of traders called on additional superintendent of Aurangabad rural police Nirmala Devi and presented her a memorandum. They demanded immediate action against culprits, who kidnapped and murdered Thakkar.
Waluj Sarafa Association
Meanwhile, a report from Waluj says that the Waluj Sarafa Association also observed a bandh protesting against the murder of the jeweller. The association suspects that he was kidnapped and murdered. Apart from Waluj, bandh was also observed at Pandharpur, Bajaj Nagar and Ranjangao, added the report. News-LT

The curt reply from 4-time MP of the city deeply hurt the IPS rank cop. The next moment he removed the turban and left the venue without speaking to anybody there. The development left all present there upset and in a bid to ease the tension, MLAs Jaiswal, Shirsat and Ghadamode, tried their best to placate the commissioner of police but the latter got into his car and left the area.   When contacted for his version over the development, CP Kumar said, "I reached the venue sharp at 11 am and MP Khaire was late by an hour. I was in a hurry and I left the spot when he reached there, but I didn"t speak anything to him. Therefore there is no question of my humiliation," Kumar added. A trivial issue: Khaire

They were travelling on foot for three days. In the midway, some thieves took away their cash, mobiles and cameras. Mohit did not get even water to drink. They did try to give him some by soaking a cloth in water. It was indeed a horrifying situation.
"The rescue operation, which was comparatively slow in the past four days, suddenly gained momentum as Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde personally issued orders to the army officers. Nineteen persons, including eight from my family, had gone on pilgrimage to Kedarnath. The orders were issued to search them at the earliest and hence our hopes have increased," stated Partur MLA Suresh Jethlia.
Speaking to Lokmat Times on phone, he said, "Around 25,000 people are still there in the mountains and hilly terrain. There is a possibility that my bother Dineshkumar Kanhaiyalal Jethlia and other family members would be found at Kedarnath - Gaurikund area and the search operation has gained momentum. Out of these people, Mohit Toshniwal and Mrs Bajaj have died. Vijay Jethlia, Sunita Jethlia and Sujay Jethlia, who had stayed at Ramkund, have been found and were brought back to Deharadun safely. As the rumors spread at Ramkund about the natural disaster, all the people got scattered. Some went upwards on the mountains and the Jethlia group also got separated in the chaos."
Jethlia said his brother Dinesh Jethlia, Durga Jethlia, Naresh Jethlia, Bhagirathi Jethlia, Khushboo Jethlia are still missing. "This is the most horrifying incident in my life. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, school education minister Rajendra Darda and others are taking efforts to rescue pilgrims. For the first four days, the entire rescue machinery was in a chaotic condition. Today, I met home minister Shinde and he issued order to launch search for the Jethlia family in Kedarnath to Gaurikund area. As there was no rain today, I am very hopeful that my family members will be rescued soon," he said. News-LT

A youth from Aurangabad hypnotized music lovers in Pattaya (Thailand) through his magical mastery on drum beat. Born and brought up in Aurangabad, the drummer Rahul Kiran Joshi is now a student of world famous percussionist Taufiq Qureshi and musician Pankaj Sharma. His childhood was like other children who like to beat empty tins with thin bamboo sticks and produce some sound. But the only difference between other children and Rahul was the sense of rhythm and consistency in playing those tin drums. On his repeated demands, his father gave him a real drum when he was in standard ninth. It was his first step towards becoming a future drummer. Within a short span, Rahul became an expert drummer. Late Manoj Jahagirdar, a guitarist from the same Jyoti Nagar area where Rahul was staying and side rhythmist Nandu Valsangkar gave him opportunities to play drum in their shows. They also helped him to get shows. In one such show, Rahul played drum on super-duper Bollywood song 'aaja aaja, main hun pyar tera' and it proved a turning point in his life.
The public response to that performance boosted his ambition of becoming a drummer and he decided to get training from experts. At this stage he luckily got help from his uncle and renowned stage personality Shreepad Padmakar who was in contact with Taufiq Qureshi and Pankaj Sharma since making of a movie 'Rita'. He helped Rahul to be a student of Taufiq Qureshi and Pankaj Sharma five years ago. Along with studying with them, Rahul is also studying Staff Notations from Trinity College of University of Cambridge. The hard work and the support of teachers like Taufiq Qureshi and Pankaj Sharma, Rahul's drum has accompanied several senior vocalists such as Anuradha Paudwal, Sadhan Sargam, Kunal Ganjawala, Abhijit Sawant etc in mega shows. He has also played for music documentary on Taufiq Qureshi. Rahul has played drums for Hindi movie ABCD and Marathi movie Sarpanch Bhagirath. Recently his talent was spotted by a company Armani and it invited him for a show at Pattaya in Thailand. His mastery in drums made the audience crazy in that show. Today Rahul, his hard work and the fame has become ideal for other aspiring youths who want to make a career through such talent. News-LT

In a chilling incident, an activist of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shaikh Azhar Shaikh Akthar alias Ajju Builder (33, Baijipura), was stabbed and lynched by a group of 4-5 men in lane number 10 of Baijipura on Monday at 5.30 pm. A riot erupted after the incident leaving two injured.
One of the injured, Shaikh Athar Shaikh Akthar (36), is the brother of the deceased while the name of the other is Akbar. Both of them have been admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Shaikh Athar has suffered some head injuries and he is reported to be serious. Akbar is out of danger but still in the hospital while his accomplice, Babar, (full names not known) has been detained by the Jinsi police.
Horrible scene on the road
According to the assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Naresh Meghrajani, Ajju Builder offered 'Asr' Namaz in Noor mosque and left for Central Naka on his motorcycle at 5.30 pm when Akbar, Babar and some unidentified people intercepted him and picked up a quarrel. Next moment, the verbal duel converted into a fierce fighting as Akbar, Babar and others launched an attack on Ajju Builder with a sword, a dagger and showered him with kicks and blows. They lynched him even as he lay motionless on the ground. The noisy scuffle attracted some supporters of Ajju Builder and Shaikh Athar launched a counter attack on Akbar, Babar and their accomplices leaving Akbar injured. Shaikh Akthar too suffered head injuries in the melee.
Rushed to private hospital
Ajju Builder was rushed to Apex Hospital soon after the incident. On examining him, doctors referred him to the GMCH, where medical officers declared him dead. The private hospital and GMCH were thronged by Baijipura residents and tight security arrangements were made at both hospitals by the police. Some of the people partly ransacked the private hospital, however police acted swiftly and dispersed the mob.
Area gripped by tension
The news of the incident spread like a wildfire in the area and as a result thousands of people took to streets in the area. Shops and other business establishments were closed down. Some hooligans resorted to stone-hurling, spreading tension. Huge police force was deployed around the murder spot.
Political rivalry
ACP Meghrajani said that the victim was running a health club and had contested 2010 municipal election on the ticket of NCP. He lost the election and was simmering with anger. Moreover, there were some financial dealings between the two parties. Ajju Builder's murder could be fallout of either of two disputes. However, things will get cleared only after investigation is completed. Victim's mother has lodged a complaint with the Jinsi police station and the work of registering a case was in process till late Monday night. Sections of murder and riot will be invoked in the case, ACP Meghrajani added. News-LT

Convict released on bail Convict Devesh Datta Pathrikar was released on bail after he furnished cash surety of Rs 15,000 and personal bond.
The sentence will be suspended for a month during which he can appeal against the verdict. Devesh paid Rs 5,000 towards the fine slapped on him by the assistant sessions judge, S B Kachre. The convict has decided to challenge the judgment in the superior court. Meanwhile, the prosecution too has decided to seek enhancement of punishment from the higher authority.  Devesh Pathrikar, son of Congress leader Datta Pathrikar, was today sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment and slapped a penalty of Rs 5,000 for abetting the suicide of Shweta Borse.
The first assistant sessions judge, S B Kachre, delivered the judgment amidst the packed court hall here on Monday noon. The convict will have to undergo imprisonment of three more months, if he fails to pay the fine. Ten witnesses were examined by the prosecution during the five-year-long trial of the case. The convict, Devesh Pathrikar, refuted charges till the very last.
Hardest punishment be awarded During the arguments prior to awarding the sentence, additional public prosecutor, Rajendra Mugdia, said the toughest punishment should be meted out to Devesh as the charge of abetment to suicide has been proven against him. Shweta Borse, an engineering graduate girl with bright academic record, was driven to take the step of ending her life only because of harassment from Devesh. He was 21-year-old matured youth at the time of incident. Keeping the present scenario wherein there is an outcry over the crimes against women, the convict deserves maximum punishment, Mugdia contended. Adv Harshad Nimbalkar was appointed as the special prosecutor for this case.
About the case
As reported earlier, the 22-year-old girl, Shweta Vinayak Borse, ended her life by consuming a poisonous substance in her house situated in Cidco N-3 on the night of December 30, 2005. Her father Vinayak Borse had lodged a complaint against Devesh Pathrikar with the Mukundwadi police station accusing him of blackmailing her from time to time and forcing her to commit suicide. Devesh had reportedly taken objectionable photographs of the girl after giving her a dose of sedatives. The incident remained in media limelight as both parties - complainant and accused - are political heavyweights. News-LT
