The crime branch of the city police arrested a man on the charge of seeking ransom of Rs 1 crore from the director of Rucha Engineering Company, Umesh Dashrathi, at a hotel in Waluj on Monday night at 9. The man accused of extortion has been identified as Mahesh Prabhuanna Chikankar (22, Pawannagar, Ranjangaon). He is a native of village Peer Mangrul in Washim district. He was arrested after 5 days of hide-and-seek between him and the crime branch cops and had agreed to accept Rs 30 lakh after bargaining.
The crime branch police inspector, Avinash Aghav, said that the Rucha Engineering manager, Nagnath Karade (35, Bajajnagar, Waluj), lodged a complaint stating that he received a call on his mobile phone from an unknown man on Thursday night at 8.30. The caller told Karade that he is in possession of a CD, of the company owner, Umesh Dashrathi, which he will hand over in lieu of Rs 1 crore and sought his mobile number. The wise manager, Karade, gave his another of his own mobile number saying that it was Dashrathi's number and as anticipated he received a call on that mobile phone immediately. This time Karade spoke like Umesh Dashrathi and started bargaining, that Rs 1 crore is too big an amount and he wouldn't be able to pay it. The extortionist agreed to hand over the CD to him at Rs 30 lakh. The deal took 2-3 days and 5-7 calls. Meanwhile Umesh Dashrathi in person approached the police and informed them about the crime. The deputy commissioner of police (DCP, HQ), Vasant Pardeshi, directed PI Aghav to look into the matter and acting on the directions, Aghav laid traps for 5-6 times, but failed to nab the extortionist as he grew suspicious that the police were alerted.
Dahi-Handi trick worked
PI Aghav told Karade to tell Mahesh that it won't be safe to exchange CD and money in the city due to tight security for Dahi-Handi. Police were checking vehicles and Nakabandi had been enforced. So it would be safer to do meet in Waluj and Mahesh agreed. Karade phoned Mahesh and told him to come with the CD to Trupti Guest House in Maharana Pratap Chowk in Waluj on Monday night, where he would give the bag stashed with cash and Mahesh would give the CD. Mahesh agreed to do so and came at the guest house and was nabbed by the crime branch cops.

A 19-year-old woman athlete died in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday night following alleged negligence by doctors. According to details, Ashwini Bolkar, who was a rising star at national and international levels, was suffering from fever since July 22. She visited a clinic near her house. Following vomiting, she was later shifted to the municipal hospital (N-11), suspecting dengue. She was put on saline and administered an injection. Her CBC test was conducted as vomiting continued.
The athlete was shifted to the GMCH on July 28 after it was found that white cell count in her blood had reduced drastically. The GMCH doctors asked her family members on Monday that a sonography test could not be done on Tuesday being a public holiday. Due to this, she was rushed to the Hedgewar Hospital, where she could not be admitted due to lack of room. So, the patient was shifted back to the GMCH. Sahadu Bolkar, father of the victim, claimed that the doctors kept administering saline throughout the day on July 29. "Even on July 30, doctors ignored her condition. They removed water from her back for test. Her condition deteriorated further when she saw blood in the injection," he said. Ashwini Bolkar was shifted to the ICU. The doctors did not know that her white cell count had gone down to 21,000 from 48,000. She breathed her last at 11 pm on Wednesday. She was cremated at a crematorium in N-11 on Thursday morning.
Sahadu Bolkar said the doctors of the GMCH refused to give the medical report of his daughter.
GMCH Medicine Department Head Dr Mangala Borkar denied the allegations of negligence by her parents. "Her condition was fine till Wednesday afternoon. However, it deteriorated in the night and she died. We were also shocked," Dr Borkar added. News-LT

The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) dream of streamlining the city's unorganised fish market is all set to come true in the next 30-40 days. Its new and centralized state-of-the-art fist market at Shahganj will be ready soon. Afsar Siddiqui, executive engineer in the AMC and project in-charge, said all the civic work of the market was ready. "We are now installing commercial category refrigerators in it. There will be five such refrigerators in the market and we have already completed work on two units. Three more units are to be installed in the next 10-15 days," he said.

To streamline the fish trade, the municipal corporation is constructing the modern market on a 60x20-metre plot in the heart of the city. The market will have 50 counters, a storage room and a 10,000-litre effluent treatment plant in the mutli-storied building. B S Naikwade, animal husbandry officer in the AMC, said the civic body had identified 54 fish dealers in the city, who will be relocated to the market. "We will soon set up a committee comprising corporators, civic authorities and representatives of fish sellers to facilitate allotments of blocks in the market," he said.

At present, fish sellers are located at 10-11 different spots in the city including Central Naka, Mukunwadi, Jatwada Road, Harsul and Padegaon. "But the civic body is planning to bring them all under one roof for providing better facilities. The new market will also help the civic body to control management of waste generated in the markets," he said. The civic body said that it would not allow sale of fish on open spaces once the new market becomes operational. "Those (dealers) who do not wish to operate from the centralized market would be allowed to stay at their old locations. However, they will have to follow all the norms of solid waste management and take fresh permissions from various departments," Naikwade added. The project is being carried out through special funding from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB). Of the total project cost of Rs 1.84 crore, the NFDB is providing 90% of the fund. News-TOI
